Additional information Brain Structure

Do ensure you have pre-read the section in the PHG digital text book on Brain localisation p38-39    There are lots of links to click

We will also be looking at Plasticity and functional recovery  p40-41

Your consolidation reading should have included p 34-35 and p 36-37

Tuesday Lessons

The lesson started with a repeat of the bio questions which were in the baseline test, – once I had a quick look at your answers I saw that most of you were making the same mistakes, and I was still not seeing evidence of AO1 knowledge – even though we had covered these topics last week!  This tells me that the consolidation work is not happening – once something makes sense you need to learn it.

The baseline test answers can be found in your shared area. I will test you again next Tuesday !

You were given the PHG Bio Psych pack  and we completed page 1 – ‘Are you sympathetic’.

Then after we played some games,  we further developed our knowledge of specific areas of the brain >>>3 Identifying brain areas

The tasks you were asked to complete can be found on the last slide of the power point >>> 3 Identifying brain areas

Wednesday Lesson

Today we learnt about neural plasticity and functional recovery after trauma >>>> 1 neuroplasticity and recovery from trauma

Maguire taxi driver study was evidence for plasticity

Here is some additional material you may find useful  >> A3 info sheet neuroplasticity and recovery from trauma

Extension >>> Valk et al (2017) Structural plasticity

Prep:     All prep work is due next Tuesday.

  1. You have two essays to read both with examiners comments. Hi-light AO1 in one colour and AO3 in another. I will ask to see this on Tuesday.
  2. You have questions to answer from PHG revision guide – see power point above.
  3. You have additional questions to answer on your ‘localisation of the brain worksheet’
  4. Fill in your brain function revision cards –I will ask to see these on Tuesday.
  5. Complete the Phineas Gage  (exercise 2.5), this is page 2 in your PHG Bio Psych pack. Remember in order to access the hyperlink you will need to look at the e-version of the pack in your shared area. You will find it in the PHG materials folder, or the Bio folder.
  6. Additionally – you should be checking your understanding by trying the ‘Apply it’ questions from the Bio psych pages covered thus far. Always check the model answers in the digital text book.
  7. It is always necessary to read ahead – think about the next topic – try to be ready for it. If you read ahead you will make more sense of the lesson 🙂
  8. Over the weekend start thinking about how you would like to turn your weaker Research Methods areas into strengths.                 What kind of remedial work would you like to do over the 1/2 term to make this happen? I can give you exercises to do, information to read, past questions to practice. I can provide power points ? Direct you to YouTube clips? You could work through a work pack, you could make your own notes/revision cards – the choice is yours.

IF YOU DON’T TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR LEARNING WHO WILL?
